Pros and Cons of Mineral Makeup
by Calista
Women all over are becoming interested in the latest trend to hit the cosmetic scene – mineral makeup. In actuality, this is not a new trend as ancient women have discovered the benefits centuries ago. Famous women of the past like Cleopatra, frequently used this type of makeup to enhance beauty.
So why is there so much interest in this makeup? Are there pros and cons to using mineral makeup over traditional cosmetics?
Pros
One of the main things is that mineral makeup is completely natural. It is free from the chemicals and preservatives that can be found in traditional products. The reason for this is because it is made up of naturally found minerals that are mixed with inorganic products for color.
The results are a chemical free product that allows the pores of the skin to breathe. The chemicals used in regular makeup can block pores and cause skin conditions such as acne, dry skin and other common skin conditions. Blocked pores can result in bacterial growth that leads to these skin issues.
Mineral makeup is actually beneficial to the skin as it contains components that are good for the skin. These elements can protect the skin from the harmful rays of the sun and even has anti-inflammatory properties.
Oily skin can sometimes be worsened by using traditional makeup. For some women that already have oily skin, the results can be far from desirable. Mineral makeup eliminates this issue as there are no oils used to create the finished effect.
Mineral makeup leaves a healthy glow to a woman’s skin. The natural minerals aid in hydrating the skin leaving a more radiant and healthy look. Many women have found that wrinkles and other fine lines seem to soften and even disappear.
Mineral makeup is also water resistant which makes it nice for people spending a day at the pool or beach. Gone are the worries of makeup smudging or rubbing off. Some of the cosmetic manufacturers have even made claims that you could wear the makeup to bed and wake up the next morning with the makeup still perfect.
Cons
With any product, there are always two sides, the good and the bad. People wanting to try mineral makeup may be discouraged by the limited choices that are available. Women with darker skin may find that there are very few, if any, choices. This is due to the natural colorings that are found with this type of makeup.
Another disadvantage that some women have found is that the minerals themselves can have potentially harmful effects. As with anything, minerals can have a different effect on people. Allergic reactions can still be a concern as it depends on the way our body reacts to the minerals. Some of the common minerals that people have noticed sensitivity with are mica and bismuth oxychloride. People that have a potential issue with these have noted that they had developed itchy skin with the face reddening. There have been more incidents of this happening in areas of hotter climates. The water resistant properties of mineral makeup can be just as detrimental as it is beneficial because it is much more difficult to remove.
The mineral makeup can come in a loose powder which can make application trickier for those unfamiliar with this. The mineral makeup pros and cons are a good starting point if looking for more information. Women wanting to replace their traditional makeup with a healthier alternative may have to look no further than mineral makeup.
